Three chances. That's all you get. The harbor master boomed the news. A magnificent race across the entire Atlantic! First to row across claims the Golden Compass. Rowan gripped his oars. His heart hammered. 'This one's for us, Braveheart!' he whispered. The other sailors laughed. But Rowan stood tall.

Rowan practiced until his hands bled. He was strong and quick with the oars. WHOOOOSH! They cut the waves like knives. But he had one peculiar weakness. He couldn't swim. Not one stroke. His best friend, a clever seagull named Pip, squawked, 'You'll need me out there, matey!' Rowan smiled and gave Pip the last of his bread.
