Nothing Falls

Heat shimmered over the cracked valley floor. Ana knelt beside her sunflowers and pressed both palms into the soil. Dust puffed up around her wrists. The blooms drooped like tired umbrellas. High above, Nimbo watched until his teal ribbon trembled. Squeeze. Harder. Harder still. He bunched himself tight until he shook. Nothing. Not one drop. The brass bell on his ribbon gave a lonely little ding. Below, Ana wiped her forehead and whispered to the yellow faces, "Hold on." Nimbo floated lower. His whole self ached to help. The sky stayed empty. He was only fluff that could not cry.

The Mountain Speaks

A cool shadow slid across Nimbo. The old mountain rose like a sleeping giant, stone shoulders dusted with pine. Wind curled around them both, playful and sharp. "You squeeze too soon, little one," the mountain rumbled, voice deep as canyon rock. Nimbo's bell jingled. "I only want rain for Ana!" The wind spun a spiral of dry leaves. "Wanting is the start. Knowing is the path." Nimbo drifted closer to the peak. Something new stirred inside his fluff—curiosity bright as morning. The mountain waited. The wind waited. Far below, the sunflowers waited too. What did knowing even mean?

The Lake Lesson

Wind tugged Nimbo toward a wide blue lake that mirrored the sky. "Feel that warmth?" Wind asked. Sunlight kissed the water. Invisible ribbons of vapor rose. "Evaporation," the mountain named it from afar. Nimbo stretched thin and drank the rising mist. His fluff grew heavier, damper, cooler. The brass bell chimed once, bright. "I am changing!" he called. Too fast he puffed outward and scattered droplets everywhere—except the valley. Ana looked up, hope flashing, then frowned as the drops vanished on hot rock far away. Nimbo shrank, embarrassed. The conundrum sat heavy. Learning felt messy and unfair.

Rising Trouble

"Now rise," said the mountain. "Cool air waits higher." Nimbo climbed. The air thinned and chilled. Condensation! Tiny droplets beaded inside him like glass beads. He swelled gray at the edges. Then wind shoved hard. Nimbo tumbled, bell ringing wild, and dumped a sudden sheet of rain on the mountain goats. They bleated and bolted. SPLAT went the wet rock. Preposterous splash! Ana still waited thirsty below. Nimbo's teal core dimmed with shame. Ruin. Total ruin. "I ruin everything," he whispered. The mountain's voice rolled steady. "Chaos teaches. Choose the path again."

The Choice

Nimbo hovered in the quiet after the spill. He could float away and stay small forever. Or he could finish what he started. He remembered Ana's hands in the dust. He remembered the sunflowers' bowed heads. No more rushing. "I will gather properly," he said, voice steady. "I will rise. I will wait until the droplets join." Wind circled him like a cheer. The mountain hummed approval. Nimbo drifted back to the lake, patient this time. He pulled moisture slow and sure. His ribbon lay calm. The bell gave one clear note. The hero he wanted had begun.

Heavy Enough

Nimbo rose over the mountain peak where air turned cold as well water. Droplets joined droplets. They grew fat. They grew heavy. His whole body turned the color of soft slate. Wind guided him with impeccable care toward the thirsty valley. Below, Ana shaded her eyes. The first cool shadow touched her sunflowers. Hold. Hold. Hold until the weight feels right. Then he opened. Rain fell in silver threads, steady and kind. Soil darkened. Leaves lifted. The valley drank. Nimbo's bell sang with every drop that left him. Old Nimbo could never have waited. New Nimbo could.

Rainbow Dance

Sunlight broke through as the last drops fell. A rainbow arched from mountain to barn, colors clean and true. Ana spun between the sunflowers, boots splashing mud puddles, arms wide. "Thank you, sky!" she called. Nimbo, lighter now, settled into a soft white curl. His teal ribbon dripped once. The brass bell gave a happy final ding that matched Ana's splash. Wind chuckled through the wet leaves. The mountain stood proud and quiet. Nimbo watched Ana dance while the valley drank deep. Tomorrow the lake would call again. For now, the rainbow was enough—and so was he.
