Seeds and Static

Seed crates rattled loose across the Marigold's deck. One lid popped. Blue moon-seeds skittered like marbles under the console lights. Captain Priya dove, coral blanket-cape flapping, and scooped the last seed before it rolled into a vent. "Gizmo, status!" Her voice cracked with leftover panic. The little silver robot whirred. "Mission clock: forty-seven minutes to moon garden drop. Fuel: tight. Seeds: ninety-nine percent recovered." Priya grinned. Then the speakers crackled. A thin, trembling call cut through the static—a star-whale calf's song, lost and scared. Priya froze. Asteroid field ahead. The calf was in there. Alone.

The Impossible Clock

Priya dropped into the pilot seat. "Play the call again." Gizmo projected a shimmering hologram: a small star-whale calf tumbling between rocks, song looping weaker each time. "Pod signature: three sectors back. Calf is drifting into the dense belt." Priya's fingers drummed the console. Mission clock blinked red. Forty-four minutes. Moon garden needed those seeds before the frost cycle locked the soil. Her throat tightened. "If we divert, we burn fuel. We might miss the window." Gizmo's optics dimmed. "Conundrum confirmed." Outside, asteroids spun like slow knives. The calf's song hit a high, lonely note. Priya's jaw set. "Plot a rescue course. Fast."

First Pass Fails

The Marigold plunged into the belt. Rocks the size of houses wheeled past. Priya threaded the ship between two grinding giants. There—the calf, silver-blue and no bigger than their freighter, thrashing in a debris spiral. "Easy, little one," Priya called over external speakers. She eased closer, thrusters whispering. The calf panicked. Its flipper clipped a jagged shard. The shard spun free and SMACKED the Marigold's side. Alarms blared. Gizmo tumbled. "Hull scrape! Guidance wobble!" The calf bolted deeper into the densest cluster, song turning frantic. Priya's hands shook on the stick. Worse. She had made it worse. Fuel gauge dropped another tick.

Lights or Deadline

Gizmo stabilized. "Thirty-one minutes. Fuel critical if we chase again." Priya stared at the seed crates strapped tight behind her. The moon garden. Families waiting for the first green shoots. Her coral cape hung heavy on her shoulders. She could turn now. Deliver on time. Leave the calf. The thought tasted like metal. "No." She unbuckled, crawled to the floodlight array, and tore open the manual override. "Gizmo, dump non-essential power into the forward lamps. All of it." "That leaves thrusters on half. Treacherous." "I know." Priya's voice went quiet and fierce. She flipped the final switch. The Marigold's nose blazed bright as a second sun.

Beacon Path

Priya flew by feel. Half-thrust. Every correction slow and precise. The forward lamps cut a golden tunnel through the rock storm. She pulsed them—bright, dim, bright—in the rhythm of a star-whale lullaby her mother once hummed. The calf stopped thrashing. Its huge dark eye found the light. "That's it," Priya murmured. "Follow the pretty ship." The calf edged closer, matching her crawl. An asteroid tumbled dead ahead. Priya rolled the Marigold; the calf mirrored, sleek and trusting now. Gizmo's voice cracked with awe. "Ingenious pattern lock. Calf is syncing." Priya's arms burned. Twenty-two minutes. Keep the rhythm. Don't break the trust.

Pod Song

They cleared the last spinning boulder. Open space bloomed. And there—the pod. Twelve adult star-whales, vast as comets, singing a thunderous welcome. The calf surged forward. Its mother curved around it, song rising in pure relief. Priya blinked hard. She had done it. Then the adults turned. They formed a living corridor of bright bodies, swimming ahead of the Marigold, clearing micro-debris with lazy flicks of their tails. Gizmo whooped—a tinny electronic cheer. "Escort established! Optimal vector locked to moon garden!" Priya let out one short, shaky whoop of her own. Fuel warning still amber. But the path was clear. The pod was giving them speed they no longer had.

Garden Drop

The moon garden dome rose like a pearl. Landing clamps locked. Priya and Gizmo hauled the last seed crate down the ramp as the frost-cycle siren began its slow climb. Gardeners in green suits rushed forward, staring up at the star-whale pod circling high above like living fireworks. Priya pressed one blue seed into the prepared soil herself. It drank the light and unfurled a single silver sprout. Behind her the calf's mother sang one soft note that vibrated the dome glass. Priya touched the new sprout, coral cape settling around her knees, and listened to that note until the siren stopped. The garden had its seeds. The calf had its home.
